I wrote this in 1984 when AIDS was just beginning to become recognised as a very serious problem.

It barely impacts on my story.

My motivation was to offer a novel for mature adolescents which was 'realistic' and 'positive' and which dealt with coming to terms with oneself and new situations (a lifetime's work - not just an issue for adolescents) in an ordinary Australian context.

I think that, like its hero, it begins awkwardly but ends well.
